"He did this out of a deep-seated responsibility as a father," Egbert said. "There is no demon here."

But Peter Kurth said he doubted that Fagan was responsible for any significant parenting of the girls. He said Fagan's mother, who was living in Florida, and the two women he married in Palm Beach were responsible for most of the girls' care.

"He was not changing their diapers," Peter Kurth said. "He has always had females to do the hands-on work of raising children. You can believe me: Stephen Fagan is not equipped to raise a puppy."
